MY STORY

My name is Brent Becker, I'm a husband and father to 3 wonderful girls. I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba and work as a Director of Programs and Patient Services for the Victoria General Hospital. My work experience started like many others, trying to figure our where I would land. I've worked in customer service since a teenager and found a passion for helping those in need. I was lucky enough to work as a Health Care Aide prior to entering the University of Manitoba where I received a Bachelor of Nursing degree (B.N.). This provided valuable opportunities to evaluate future careers through various interactions with other health care disciplines. In the end, nursing was an obvious next step and I couldn't imagine a better fit.

After completing my senior practicum in the Emergency Department (ED), the next step in my journey was the Winnipeg Critical Care Nursing Education Program. I'm grateful to my colleagues in the emergency program who shared their wisdom and knowledge, without their guidance and support the Intensive Care Unit may have been anxiety provoking. As much as i enjoyed caring for critically ill patients and families, I missed the chaos and uncertainty of working in the ED. I accepted an educator role with the Emergency program for the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA). This position provided an opportunity to tailor education in order to meet the needs of staff, coordinate policies, procedures and guidelines for the program.

After leading education and training, it was time to explore administration. I was afforded the opportunity to hone my skills as a Manager of Patient Care with the Mental Health program at Health Sciences Centre. Managing the care of individuals experiencing acute and/or chronic illnesses has reinvigorated my desire to improve the lives of patients and families. After many years, I was able to return to the facility that launched my professional journey. With varied experience I'm better able to serve patients, families, my local community and region.

My practice is guided by the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba. This self-regulating body provides oversight for it's members related to code of ethics and standards of practice. In order to protect the public from possible harm, academic requirements and practice competencies must be achieved for members to obtain licensure. As a Director, it is my responsibility to ensure clinical practice guidelines set forth by the WRHA and/or practice standards outlined by professional regulatory bodies have been adhered to.
