Manitoba Perspective – Determinants of Health
The 2015 Health Status of Manitobans report breaks down health and well-being into 3 stages, child, adult and older adult, summarizing information from areas “selected based on burden of illness and preventability.” Discussing prenatal to childhood and adolescence accessing services and potential issues of concern. During adulthood, modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors. For older adults, the report identifies concerns related to injuries causing hospitalization, neurocognitive disorders and risks associated with social isolation.
The report goes on to identify health concerns related to a specific group of people or population including individuals who identify as:
1) Metis/First Nations and Inuit, providing a history of colonization and discussing health issues as a result of colonization, including type 2 diabetes, suicide, substance abuse and disassociation with an individual’s cultural identity
2) Individuals experiencing mental health concerns/services based on a multitude of factors including economic and psychological. Suggesting that physical activity, connection with others/community, “inclusion and equity” may prevent future problems.
3) The Environment wi which a person lives and interacts with physical surroundings. This is further broken down into 5 sections, such as methods of transportation, clean air, opportunities to create socialization within communities, affordable housing and access to healthy foods.
4) Gaps in health related to equity.
Determinants of Health

Unfortunately, the issues discussed throughout the report do not have specific measures to address these concerns. For specifics, one would need to search through the Province of Manitoba’s “Health, Seniors and Active Living” website.
